The nuclear energy technologies and safety systems ensure proper operating conditions are achieved, accidents are prevented, or their consequences mitigated, thus, protecting workers, the public and the environment from radiation and other hazards in the workplace. The most relevant safety principle in a nuclear reactor facility is the reactor's ability to shut down safely and adequate cooling to mitigate accidents. While locating the plant, plant conditions must conform to appropriate principles such as internationally accepted health, safety, and radiation protection.

This interactive training course discusses the key technical concepts of nuclear power plant safety, the main components of a nuclear power plant and the various safety systems are described and discussed. It includes the fundamentals of nuclear power generation, past nuclear accidents, potential impacts on both personnel and the public, and emergency response provisions. It will be a comprehensive “core skills” course that includes safe operation techniques.

Objectives
